Anthropology in Action

 

Amber Pierson

Amber Pirson (on the right) is a rising senior majoring in Anthropology and International Studies. Her research interests and desire to end human trafficking led her to complete the UK Fulbright Summer Institute at the University of Bristol (2017) and the Boren Scholarship at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand (2018). In Bristol, Amber studied the History and Heritage of the Transatlantic Slave Trade through archival documents. Her research centered on comparing the various experiences of slaves to that of migrants immigrating to the United States from 1780 to 1985. The challenges presented from this research inspired Amber to continue understanding the shifts in exploitative labor around the world- including South and Southeast Asia. As a result, she worked on USAID Asia Counter Trafficking in Persons project in Bangkok, Thailand. This project worked to combat exploitative labor practices in supply chains throughout Asia, along with eradicating sex trafficking. To continue in this vein, Amber plans to enroll in a joint degree program in graduate school studying law and international human rights.
