91tvӰԺ associate professor marks symbolic milestone in her efforts to help teen mothers in The Bahamas
Equity is at the heart of Ruthmae Sears’s research and passion for continuing education. Her desire to help young women succeed brings a new level of pride to the 91tvӰԺ associate professor of mathematics education and associate director of the 91tvӰԺ Coalition for Science Literacy. She just returned from The Bahamas, where she grew up, to celebrate a significant milestone for a program she’s been supporting for 16 years.

Student Spotlight: Alicia Miller
From the time she began her studies at 91tvӰԺ, Mathematics Education major Alicia Miller has taken on opportunities such as working as a resident assistant for the Education Living Learning Community and becoming a part-time tutor through 91tvӰԺ’s Tutor-A-Bull program. Now, with graduation just around the corner, she reflects on her teacher preparation program and the experiences that have led her to where she is today.

Associate professor elected as fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science
College of Education Associate Professor Ruthmae Sears, PhD, was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Sears is the first Black faculty member at 91tvӰԺ to receive this recognition, which is one of the world’s most prestigious honors for academic research.

A cross-departmental team from 91tvӰԺ is one of four groups chosen nationwide to participate in a new National Science Foundation (NSF) pilot program called All-ABOARD, which stands for “Alliance-Building Offshore to Achieve Resilience and Diversity.” Members of the team that prepared the application from the College of Education include Ruthmae Sears, PhD, and Dana Thompson Dorsey, PhD.
