’s (COPH) , associate professor, released Health Services Management: Competencies and Careers, a comprehensive resource designed to equip students and professionals with the skills needed to succeed in the evolving health care industry.
“I wanted my students—and health administration students throughout the world—to have a straightforward, easy-to-read overview of the health services management profession,” Pruitt said. “The chapters are short with lots of relevant examples, information-rich tables and practical career advice.”
The book, written with Generation Z learners in mind, breaks down essential competencies such as strategic planning, financial management and organizational design while bridging theory with real-world applications. Each chapter features case studies and decision-making exercises to reinforce key concepts.
A standout feature is the inclusion of more than 30 informational interviews with industry professionals.
“Health services management is a diverse career field, so my students struggle to understand all of the many roles and settings,” Pruitt said. “The podcast-style 'informational interviews' give them insights into careers related to each chapter.”
Pruitt, who is also a COPH alumnus, underscored the importance of problem-solving and communication in leadership.
“Today’s health care business environment is more challenging than ever,” he said. “Students must be able to navigate complex issues while also supporting the patients and clinicians they serve.”
He advises students and early-career professionals to focus on their strengths.
“Know thyself,” he said. “There are many job opportunities, but competition is tough. Developing skills that make you stand out is key.”
Beyond students, Pruitt notes the book may serve as a useful tool for mid-and late-career professionals preparing for the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Board of Governor’s exam.
“This board exam is rigorous, and the textbook might help refresh the competencies needed to pass,” he said.
Available for purchase online, Health Services Management provides a roadmap for current and aspiring health services managers to thrive in a dynamic industry.
