EUS 3022 - Russia

Area study courses are multi-disciplinary in nature and deal with one or more countries
of a region. Each course combines some measure of political, economic, historical,
religious, geographic, anthropological, and sociological analysis in dealing with
salient features and current problems.

EUH 3575 - History of Imperial Russia, 1689-1917
Credit(s): 3
A survey of social, political, economic, and cultural development in the Russian Empire
from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. Topics include the expansion and modernization
of the Empire, the culture of the Imperial court, peasant rebellions, social and legal
reforms, the role of the West, and the collapse of the Romanov dynasty.

EUH 3576 - History of the Soviet Union, 1917-1991.

A study of Soviet society under communism from the Revolution to the collapse of the
USSR. Topics include the origins and development of revolutionary socialism, the Bolshevik
seizure of power, Stalinism and the Great Terror, popular dissent and resistance,
the treatment and experience of ethnic minorities, Gorbachev and the dissolution of
the Soviet Union.

This course provides an exposure to the discipline of history by examining a specific
historical issue and its relation to at least one of the following dimensions: race,
gender, ethnicity and international or environmental perspectives. Classes may focus
upon issues such as biography, labor, race relations or women's history.
