Stavros Center Programs, Workshops and Seminars

The Stavros Center hosts numerous *FREE* professional development opportunities throughout the school year and summer for K-12 educators. The workshops are aimed at arming teachers with tools for implementing economic education and financial literacy curriculum into their classrooms. Subject areas vary from Science, Social Science, Civics, Economics, Math, Sustainability and more.

We distribute flyers through district contacts within 6 surrounding counties including: Hillsborough, Polk, Pasco, Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota.

Every workshop has a Registration Survey under the information. One week before the workshop you have registered for, you will receive a confirmation email that includes details and parking information. Additionally, a reminder is sent the day before. In person workshops are held at 91tvӰԺ Tampa in the Stavros Center (4111 91tvӰԺ Willow Dr. Tampa, Fl. 33620) from 5:30pm-8:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursday. Virtual Workshops vary.

Thursday, November 7- Assembly Line

Are you ready to dive into the world of assembly lines and economic concepts? Our interactive workshop is designed to make learning fun, engaging, and practical.  Experience the buzz of a real assembly line! You'll work in teams to assemble PARCOS and see first-hand how you can have your students see economic concepts in action. You'll be actively participating, problem-solving, and gaining insights that you can apply to your classroom. This isn't your average workshop. Discover essential economic terms like supply and demand, opportunity cost, transaction costs, risk, and many more in an engaging and interactive environment. Tuesday, November 12- Math Adventures in Financial Literacy

In this workshop, we will explore the power of using explore activities to engage middle school students. By incorporating hands-on and interactive experiences, we can ignite curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in financial literacy. Participants will learn practical strategies and resources for implementing explore activities in their classrooms, including real-world applications, problem-solving challenges, and group investigations. Join us to discover how these dynamic activities can enhance student learning, promote critical thinking, and make math an exciting adventure for middle school students.

Thursday, November 14- Ecophobia (Sustainability)

Ecophobia, the distress and concern individuals feel regarding environmental problems, permeates our society, manifesting as feelings of helplessness and guilt. A recent study starkly reveals its impact, with 82% of children expressing fear, sadness, and anger when confronted with environmental issues.

Traditional approaches to communicating environmental threats to children often exacerbate ecophobia, leaving them feeling overwhelmed and powerless. However, a promising alternative lies in fostering environmental empathy and literacy through narrative children’s books and engaging activities. By instilling a love for and empathy towards all living beings in our environment, we equip children with the tools to become stewards of our planet. You will leave this workshop with standards aligned lessons to reduce ecophobia for use in ELA, science and social studies classrooms.

Understanding children's perspectives on these issues is paramount. Only by empowering them with the knowledge and compassion necessary to confront environmental challenges can we cultivate a generation of sustainability superheroes ready to conquer ecophobia and safeguard our planet's future.

Tuesday, November 19- International Trade: "Sunshine and Shipments: Sailing Through Standards on International Trade"

virtual series 2- AI Suites In-Depth, Wednesdays- October 2,23,30 at 5:30pm-6:30pm:

This exciting series will dive specifically into Software Suites that deal with artificial intelligence. Specific suites will be announced in your confirmation email one week before the workshop.

Virtual Series 3- Elementary Economics, Wednesdays- November 6,13,20 at 4:00pm-5:00pm:

Using Children’s Picture Books to Teach Elementary Economics and Financial Literacy. This engaging series will explore innovative ways to teach elementary school social studies through captivating children's picture books! We will explore the functions of money, the differences between needs and wants, goods and services, and the importance of making choices. Additionally, students are introduced to concepts related to personal finance, such as saving, borrowing, and the role of banks.
