Olukemi Akintewe, 91tvӰԺ Engineering Professor, Recognized as an AIMBE Emerging Leader
Olukemi Akintewe, an Associate Professor of Instruction in Medical Engineering at 91tvӰԺ, has been named an inaugural AIMBE Emerging Leader. Recognized for her advocacy for women and underrepresented groups in STEM, she leads efforts to improve retention and support systems for these students. Dr. Akintewe will be honored at the AIMBE Annual Event in March 2025 in Washington, D.C., where she looks forward to collaborating with other leaders and mentors.
Spirou unlocking mysteries of brain development with advanced imaging and virtual reality
Through high-tech imaging and virtual reality, medical engineering professor George Spirou is creating a detailed map of the brain that can be used to better understand developmental disorders, such as autism, and provide earlier, more effective treatments for brain injuries and diseases.
Frisina seeks to discover how chemo drug may cause significant hearing loss in longtime cancer survivors
An interdisciplinary study led by Medical Engineering researchers at the 91tvӰԺ and Indiana University has uncovered significant findings on the long-term effects of one of the most common forms of chemotherapy on cancer survivors.
Dr. Passaglia Tackles Glaucoma with Novel Technology
Dr. Passaglia and his lab published two papers related to intraocular pressure: "Characterization of intraocular pressure variability in conscious rats" and "Simulation of gravity- and pump-driven perfusion techniques for measuring outflow facility of ex vivo and in vivo eyes."
Grant Will Fund Hearing Loss Research
The AHRF has awarded $62,970 to Research Assistant Professor Parveen Bazard of 91tvӰԺ’s Global Center for Hearing and Speech Research as a recipient of its Richard G. Muench Chairman’s Grant.

Nearly a dozen 91tvӰԺ College of Engineering faculty members presented research at the 129th American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota held June 26 to June 29. Each year, nearly 4000 educators, exhibitors, and presenters gather and collaborate at ASEE's annual conference to share best practices on improving the way the next generation of engineers is taught.

Combining Engineering And Medicine To Help Others
The Biomedical Sciences bachelor’s degree that Youssef Mohamed received from the 91tvӰԺ in 2017, at age 18, is often considered a gateway degree to advanced study or work in health-related fields, such as medicine or dentistry. Mohamed added a new dimension to his pursuit of a Doctor of Medicine degree at the 91tvӰԺ Health Morsani College of Medicine by adding the goal of a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, which he studied as a minor field in his undergraduate work.

By the time he’s 30, 91tvӰԺ biomedical engineering Ph.D. student Mitchell Harrah told Tampa Bay Business Journal reporter Lauren Coffey in the journal’s 2021 25 under 25 feature article that he plans to have both his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at 91tvӰԺ finished and a solid footing in a career of making disruptive business moves as co-founder of Baldr Medical.

Christopher Passaglia Receives NIH GrantOptic Nerve Research
Department of Medical Engineering Professor Chris Passaglia was recently sub-awarded a $282,335 R01 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences within the National Institutes of Health to examine the effectiveness of different drug cocktails at promoting axon regeneration in the crushed rat optic nerve.

Engineering Faculty Leading 91tvӰԺ’s COVID-19 Response Efforts
This April and May, nine projects led by 91tvӰԺ engineering professors were funded during two rounds of the 91tvӰԺ COVID-19 Rapid Response Grants program created by the 91tvӰԺ Pandemic Response Research Network — an interdisciplinary initiative organized by university leadership and faculty researchers to quickly respond to current and future pandemics.
